What type of licence do I need to drive a van?

This is a simple question, that gets asked a lot fortunately there is a fairly straightforward answer. Most hire vans, Excluding minibuses, and specifically those under 3500kgs can be driven on a Category B driver’s licence, that is the standard driving licence issued for cars. Surprisingly enough this includes Luton Panel Vans and XLWB vans. Though for any vehicles, vans, small trucks, etc. that are over this weight limit you will need a different category of driver’s licence (most commonly a HGV licence) as for minibuses this is a whole other complex area, suffice it to say you may be able to drive one for personal use if you held your licence before 1997, otherwise not. Though you should check to make sure before you book any van hire as the regulations do change from time to time.
